📋 General Features
- Resembles the maxillary central incisor in all aspects — just on a smaller scale
- Smaller than the central in every dimension except root length
- Most variable tooth in the permanent dentition — can be peg-shaped, conical, or congenitally absent
First Calcification
10 – 12 months
Crown Completed
4 – 5 years
Eruption
8 – 9 years
Root Completion
11 years
⚖️ Differences from the Central Incisor
| Feature | Lateral Incisor | Vs Central |
|---|---|---|
| Labial | Crown relatively longer cervico-incisally; distoincisal angle more rounded | Less sharp angle than central |
| Lingual | Deeper lingual fossa; more pronounced marginal ridges; may show a lingual pit | Deeper than central's fossa |
| Mesial CEJ | 3 mm | vs 3.5 mm in central |
| Distal CEJ | 2 mm | vs 2.5 mm in central |
| Root | Longer relative to crown; often shows distal apical inclination | Relatively longer root |
Exam tip: The lingual pit is a caries-prone developmental fault unique to the lateral incisor's deeper lingual fossa — a high-yield clinical point.
🦷 Incisal & Comparative Features
- From the incisal aspect: outline is more oval/rounded than the central, and narrower mesiodistally
- 2nd from the midline — the lateral incisor occupies the 2nd position in the arch
- Functionally supplements the central incisor in biting and incising
🎭 Morphological Variation
- Peg-shaped lateral: the most common morphological variation — a normal developmental variant, NOT pathology
- The maxillary lateral incisor is the 2nd most commonly congenitally absent tooth, after the 3rd molars
- Root canal is usually a single oval canal (not always perfectly round)
Remember: Peg-shaped = normal variation, not disease. Don't confuse it with a pathological finding in MCQs.
MAXILLARY LATERAL INCISOR
📋 General
Smaller than central
Except root length — longer
Most variable tooth
📅 Chronology
Calcification: 10–12 mo
Crown: 4–5 yrs
Eruption: 8–9 yrs
Root: 11 yrs
⚖️ Vs Central
Distoincisal more rounded
Lingual pit — caries-prone
Mesial CEJ 3mm (vs 3.5mm)
Deeper lingual fossa
🎭 Variation
Peg-shaped — most common
2nd most absent tooth
1
Root Length Exception
Smaller than the central incisor in every dimension except root length, which is relatively longer.
2
Most Variable Tooth
The maxillary lateral incisor shows the greatest morphological variation of all teeth — peg-shaped, conical, or absent.
3
Lingual Pit
Deeper lingual fossa with a possible lingual pit — a key caries-prone site.
4
CEJ Curvatures
Mesial CEJ = 3 mm; Distal CEJ = 2 mm — both less than the central incisor's.
5
Eruption Age
Erupts at 8–9 years, slightly after the central incisor (7–8 years).
6
2nd Most Absent
After 3rd molars, the maxillary lateral incisor is the 2nd most commonly congenitally absent tooth.
7
Distoincisal Angle
More rounded distoincisal angle compared to the sharper angle on the central incisor.
8
Incisal Outline
From the incisal aspect, the outline is more oval/rounded than the central, and narrower mesiodistally.
9
Peg-Shaped Variant
Peg-shaped lateral = a normal developmental variation, not pathology.
10
Root Canal
Root canal is usually a single oval canal, with possible distal apical inclination.

👁️ Labial & Lingual Aspects
Labial
Smaller Scale, Rounder Distoincisal Angle
Similar to the central incisor but smaller, with a more rounded distoincisal angle.
Lingual
Deep Lingual Fossa & Possible Lingual Pit
A deeper fossa with more prominent ridges, sometimes showing a caries-prone lingual pit.
📐 Mesial & Distal Aspects
Mesial
Triangular Outline — 3mm Curvature
Cervical curvature of 3 mm — less than the central incisor's 3.5 mm.
Distal
2mm Curvature, Cervically-Sloping Incisal Edge
Cervical curvature of 2 mm; the incisal edge slopes cervically on the distal side.
⬆️ Incisal Aspect & Comparison
Incisal
More Oval/Rounded than the Central
From the incisal view, the outline is more oval and rounded than the central incisor's triangular shape.
Comparison
Central (Left) vs Lateral (Right)
A direct side-by-side showing the size difference and the lateral's more rounded distoincisal angle.
🎭 Morphological Variation & Root
Variation
Peg-Shaped Lateral Incisor
The most common morphological variation of this tooth — a normal developmental variant, not pathology.
Root
Longer Root, Distal Apical Inclination
The root is longer relative to the crown than the central incisor's, often showing a distal inclination near the apex.
⚠️ Exam Trap: Don't confuse a peg-shaped lateral (normal variation) with pathology — and remember it's the 2nd most commonly absent tooth after the 3rd molars.
